All Westport Art Group classes are open to both members and nonmembers, but for adult classes, current members receive a 20% discount at checkout with code -unless otherwise listed.
CLASS AND WORKSHOP LISTINGS
Monday Drawing….Returns! New session starting February 24! Registration is now open. Six Monday sessions with Patricia Schneider. In this 3 hour class we will work on drawings using a "sight size" method, understanding the importance of value to create form, how to set up your paper and tools to support gaining an understanding of creating realistic images in black and white.
Beginner Oil Painting. Six weeks starting January 6. This class is designed for all levels with a strong focus on how to match colors in light, mid and dark values. Painting is all about how one color relates to its neighbor, and how to prevent a muddy mess when using oils. See details below.
Painting Snowy Landscapes in Watercolor - A One-Day Workshop. Tuesday, January 28, 2025 with Evelyn Bernal. Painting snow with watercolors is a lot of fun, and using wet on wet technique is even better. The colors will merge softly with each other making the snow seem to glow. Register below to learn the techniques!
Drawing Portraits - A Two-Day Workshop. March 29 and 30, 10 am to 4 pm with lunch break. Immerse yourself in the wonderful world of portraiture. We will work towards a likeness from a photo provided by the instructor, developing skills to support the process. Learn about how values create the form, how to achieve softness necessary to convey skin, understand how light hits a form and drapes over the bone structure. This class is for beginners and intermediates. Sign up is open!
Mastering Composition - a 2-day workshop. April 5 and 12. Come join us to learn techniques and principles intended to dramatically improve your art. These techniques are applicable to all media, and all skill levels are welcome. Understanding composition is a talent that grows with us on our artistic journey. Using the teachings of Ian Roberts, Mary Monteiro will guide you through the eight most common compositional formats and how to avoid their pitfalls. Details below.

Let’s Continue to draw! This class is designed for beginners (even if you've never picked up a pencil), but more experienced artists are welcome. In this 3 hour class we will work on drawings using a "sight size" method, understanding the importance of value to create form, how to set up your paper and tools to support gaining an understanding of creating realistic images in black and white. The instructor will supply images that we will work from each week, and include plenty of demos and handouts to enhance the class. Class max of 12 students.
Supplies are not provided. Please bring your own supplies. Suggestions are:

any type of smooth drawing paper, 18" x 24"
masking tape

Beginner Oil Painting

This class is designed for all levels with a strong focus on how to match colors in light, mid and dark values. Painting is all about how one color relates to its neighbor, and how to prevent a muddy mess when using oils.
If you’re new to painting, you’ll receive lots of feedback and demos. If you’re an artist struggling to complete a painting or can’t figure out how to achieve more of a likeness, this class is for you! We will cover: transferring the image onto a toned canvas, creating piles of paint using our 9 oil paint colors, mixing a grayscale, how to match a color, creating thin layers in the beginning and adding more opacity towards the end, how to “paint” not draw with our brushes, fat over lean technique and much more.

PAINTING SNOWY LANDSCAPES IN WATERCOLOR

DRAWING PORTRAITS - A Two-Day Workshop
Saturday and Sunday, March 29 and 30, 2025

Immerse yourself in the wonderful world of portraiture. Instructor will supply photo of this model. We will work towards a likeness, developing skills to support the process. Learn about how values create the form, how to achieve softness necessary to convey skin, understand how light hits a form and drapes over the bone structure. This class is for beginners and intermediates.
Supplies are not provided. Please remember to bring these supplies:
*Firm backboard, not cardboard, to tape paper to. Must be at least 36” high to allow for photo at eye level when seated. Thick foam core board at least 1/2” works well and can be purchased at Michaels.
* drawing paper, 100#, at least 16” x 20”
*2B pencils- at least 6
*sharpener or sanding block with #220 grit. Glue #220 to a piece of foam board or a piece of wood.
* hand held mirror
*kabob skewer for measuring, thin knitting needle works too
*masking tape
*kneaded eraser
*cellphone to view image and see values more clearly

MASTERING COMPOSITION - ALL MEDIUMS
A 2-day Workshop with Mary Monteiro
April 5 and 12, 9 am to noon
Come join us to learn techniques and principles intended to dramatically improve your art. These techniques are applicable to all media, and all skill levels are welcome. Understanding composition is a talent that grows with us on our artistic journey. We will also explore how to guide the eye through the picture plane, cropping, identifying values for dramatic effect, using thumbnails and compositional basics.
We will also analyze a few famous paintings and discuss how the artist used composition.
The hands-on part of the class will include simple drawing exercises designed to deepen your understanding of the concepts presented.

WEDNESDAY MORNING FIGURE CLASS

Nude model at WAG on Wednesday mornings from 9 am - noon.
Fees will be $50 a month for four-week months, and $60 a month for five-week months. Single session drop-in fee is $20.

Update! Thursday painting has now moved indoors for the cool season. Meet at WAG, 1740 Main Road, Westport Point, MA. $5 at the door. 9 to Noon, including a friendly critique at the end of class. Open to all WAG members, drop-ins welcome!
Plein Air Spring through Fall…
Class paints plein air from mid-May through mid-October at wonderful locations on the South Coast. Sign up to receive the Thursday class locations here: Sign Up Form. This mailing list is also used for you to be alerted of any changes. Be sure to check your email before you leave Thursday mornings.
We paint from 9-11:45, then have a friendly but informative critique.
Inclement weather: meet at the studio - 1740 Main Rd, Westport Point. $5 fee when inside and no instructor. $15 with instructor.
Participating outdoors: free when there is no instructor. We will have an instructor occasionally with a fee of $15. Our classes have informal coaching when we have an instructor, also ending with a friendly critique.
No registration. Please pay cash or check at class. Non-members can try a class, but ongoing participation is for members only. Email Barbara Healy at edlundhealy@gmail.com for more information.

Cancellation Policy effective Sept. 1, 2021
Classes, Workshops and Demonstrations:
All classes and demonstrations will be paid in full at time of registration, except classes that are attended on a walk-in basis (when such are available).
If a student withdraws at least 2 weeks prior to the class beginning, a full refund will be given, minus a $10 processing fee. Any cancellations later than 2 weeks prior will not be refunded, except for a documented medical or family emergency, unless the spot is filled from a waiting list. In that case a 75% refund will be given.
Any classes cancelled by the Westport Art Group for any reason will be refunded in full.

Any deviation from this policy will require a majority vote of the Westport Art Group Executive Board.
